On October 2, 2004 and September 24, 2005, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NCBW) hosted its first and second annual art auction gala. The events, with major sponsorship by DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Pfizer, were organized as fund raisers for Coalition health-related programs and drew nearly 300 people—artists, gallery owners, collectors, Coalition members and others. Other sponsors were Allied Domecq, Quest Diagnostics, Harlem Brewing Company and NCBW Chapters.
In 2004, the event, which was entitled “Harlem Renaissance: A Celebration of Black Art and Culture,” was held at the New-York Historical Society. Legendary artist Elizabeth Catlett served as the honorary chair. The second art auction, “A Celebration of Black Art and Culture,” took place in 2005 at the Angora Gallery in New York City. Samella Lewis, a pioneer artist and renowned art historian, was the event’s honorary chair. In 2006, the art auction was entitled “Legends of African American Art Today & Tomorrow” and was held at the 26+ Helen Mills Theater in New York City.
