Reproductive Health Rights & Awareness

Launched in 1989, this education program addresses a range of topics related to reproductive health:  values, economics, religion, public policy, abortion, teen pregnancy, drug addiction, AIDS, stress, and nutrition.  In 1991, the Fund held a national three-day dialogue in which experts from the health field and related fields of knowledge and NCBW chapter and board members discussed the issue of reproductive health rights.  This diverse gathering of women represented a myriad of economic, political, and philosophical clusters, which translated into a host of opinions and perspectives on this issue.  The women devised strategies and endorsed recommended actions tailored to address the specific health needs of a systematically marginal segment of the American population.  The report of the dialogue has been distributed to the NCBW membership, to the participants who are not members, and to the Ford Foundation, the funding source.

SIDS Summit

The program focused on the disparity in the rate of SIDS-related deaths in the Black community as compared to that of the general population.  The summit was held January 31–February 2, 2003, at the Kellogg Conference Center at Tuskegee University in Alabama.  Its goal was to educate summit participants—community activists, day care workers, health care professionals and teenaged mothers—through informative presentations and comprehensive training sessions on SIDS prevention.  This training, it is hoped, enabled participants to return to their communities and continue the educational and public-health awareness initiative set forth at the summit.
